PARA MATAR A SAUDADE… (TO HELP FIGHT ‘SAUDADE’)

Para matar a saudade… (to help fight ‘saudade’)

Bordeaux, Saturday 11am… I jump into a plane and just over one hour later arrive in Lisbon, to catch-up with my old friends who help me fight my longing, or ‘saudade’.  Today, just like every time I come here, I feel the same emotion as I see the first contours of the city through the aircraft’s windows. Of all the places where I have put down my suitcases, Lisbon is the only one with that subtle alchemy of light, gentleness and authenticity.  You cannot explain Lisbon: you have to live it, breathe it, experience it! Just let yourself stroll through the streets bathed in light, glimpsing every now and then the white sails of boats on the Tagus below, hang onto the back of a tram to change hill, bite into roasted chestnuts on sale at every street corner, drink a strong coffee on the counter of a bar, enjoy a grilled fish on a beach just outside the city, all help put back together the puzzle of 7 years of my life spent in this part of the world where time seems to stand still.
Lisbon, Sunday 5 pm: I get back into the plane, to return to Bordeaux, my head in the clouds. Just over 12 hours in this city have helped Autumn get off to a really magical start.
