A small inner courtyard beneath a giant gum tree, a few tables with gingham tablecloths, multicoloured garlands, this is the very pleasant setting for Lautasco.

A serious establishment: at the entrance you will see the seven plaques awarded by the French travel guide called guide du Routard. It describes the place as "an operetta-like inn giving onto a tiny square, decorated with banners and Chinese lanterns, ....a delectable setting ..”

And this really is a friendly place, it’s worth sitting down and trying the traditional Portuguese fish-based dishes on offer.
The house speciality is the cataplana (the name given to a typical cooking dish  from the Algarve, but also used to designate food cooked within this dish – a sort of metal pot with two practically identical concave halves) or the Portuguese rice and seafood speciality arroz de marisco or the same dish made with tamboril (monkfish).

The portions are generous (good news, because the dessert menu is not very varied) and if you cannot finish everything, just ask to take the leftovers home with you.

After your meal, go and stroll through the narrow streets of the Alfama, listen to some fado and if you still have some energy left, climb the steps up to the Saõ Jorge castle.

2008 price for one arroz de marisco or a cataplana : 36.95 euros (for two persons sharing)
